I Set Out to Make the DIY Hernandez DA Polisher and it’s great

I was drooling while looking at the Rupes iBrid Nano polisher but didn’t want to spend the money (Update: I bought the Long Neck Nano kit.) If I was a full-time detailer and made my living detailing cars, I wouldn’t hesitate for one minute but I’m not. As a long-time car guy who owns some nice cars and loves keeping them in impeccable, showroom condition. I subscribe to the two bucket wash method and spend as much time caring for some of my cars as I do driving them. It’s sad but true.

I had my BMW dealer perform an annual oil change on my E46 M3 last week and they told me it has 105 miles more than it did last year! OK…. that’s sad and I’ll drive that one a little more this year, I promise.

Anyway, back to this title of this post. My attempt at the DIY Hernandez DA Polisher. My Griot’s Garage 3″ polisher has a 5/16-24 female thread on the tool and the 3″ backing plate has a male 5/16-24 thread. I purchased two 5/16-24 couplers and a length of 5/16 threaded rod. After cutting the rod to the proper length with a hacksaw, I screwed it into the tool and threaded both of the couplers over the rod. The second coupler leaves enough female threads to screw in the backing plate.

Now I have a nice extension on my 3 inch DA polisher. I’ve found this really helpful for door jams, bumpers and around side view mirrors. I can’t begin to tell you how much I love this setup. I’ve even used a 2″ backing plate for polishing super tight areas like the inside of rims.

Check out the Griot’s Garage 3″ Polisher on Amazon and you may buy me a cup of coffee and I do love my coffee 🙂
