Here’s where you’ll find the status of our 2013 BMW X1 35i E84 Project Sleeper

BMW brought the E84 to the US in 2012 and offered the X1 35i using the awesome N55 power-plant. While still keeping a 3.0L displacement and a posted 300hp, the N55 is very different from the N54. The biggest difference being that the N55 has a single, twin-scroll turbo vs. the true twin turbo N54. BMW termed the N55 a “twin-power” turbo but in reality it’s a single turbo with a twin-scroll compressor wheel. This single turbo setup makes it tougher to produce N54 type hp gains without a turbo upgrade. The good news is there’s a number of great turbo upgrades out there. There’s also a ton of bolt-on upgrades as well. See our top 10 list below.

So where’s our BMW X1 35i E84 project Sleeper X1 today you ask?

Here’s Our Top 10 List of N55 Mods For Your BMW X1 35i E84 Project Sleeper:

  1. ALPINA B3 FLASH – The transmission in the X1 35i is sluggish. It’s robust and stands up to significant power but let’s be honest; it’s a dog with the stock software. The good news, it’s easy to fix with the Alpina B3 TCU Flash. Check out our article about flashing the trans on our project car HERE.
  2. TUNE – There’s a variety of tune options on the market for your X1 35i. Stay with the name brands on this one, no eBay tunes allowed. We recommend and install the JB4 from Burger Tuning. The JB4 is very flexible and can be paired with a back-end flash for safer, smoother power delivery. The addition of the Burger Connect kit makes logging and tune changes a snap. You can buy one here on Amazon. For reference, your X1 35i requires the harness type B and has a pneumatic wastegate.
  3. DOWNPIPE – The next step in building real power with your N55 is a downpipe. They come in a variety of sizes and both catted and catless options are available. Catless versions are designed for vehicles used in off-road racing applications only.
  4. INTAKE – There are more options for intakes than we can list. Some of our favorites include Burgers N55 Intake, The carbon fiber Dinan intake and even the simple drop-in K&N filter. We’ve put down some real power with the K&N filter.
  5. CHARGEPIPE – The stock chargepipe on your N55 is weak where it connects to the throttle body. The joint can separate and cause a massive boost leak. Bad news at the race track. We recommend the VRSF chargepipe upgrade with a meth bung. In the event that you decide to run a meth setup in the future, these pipes give you the option.
  6. FMIC – The stock Front Mount InterCooler on your BMW X1 35i is too small to handle all the awesome power you’re producing now. The N55 is notorious for heat-soak under load and sees a significant power drop as IAT’s start to rise. Your turbos pressurize the air headed into your engine and the result is increased intake air temps. Even a stock N55 will see improvements after extended pulls on the street or at the track. You have a lot of great choices here ranging from 5-7″ upgrades. Good news is your BMW X1 35i E84 Project Sleeper uses the same FMIC as the 335i/xi. We’ve used VRSF Intercoolers and love them.
  7. Turbo – The factory turbo on the N55 is a Borg Warner B03 twinscroll. This turbo can make more HP with the above mods but starts to show its weakness in the upper RPM’s. Significant drop-off in boost can been seen on the dyno in the upper RPM range. That’s where a larger turbo comes in handy. Pure Turbos makes one of the best options for upgrade with their Stage 1. They offer a Stage 2 turbo upgrade as well but cost and labor increase considerably. Stage 1 holds much higher boost levels in the upper RPM’s and has shown up to 70 more horsepower up top. Dinan also makes a big turbo upgrade as well as RB Turbos. Unless you’re building a race-car or you want to go BIG, the Pure Stage 1 turbo is our recommendation.
  8. LPFP – If you’ve already done any of the above mods we recommend upgrading your Low Pressure Fuel Pump. As your power increases, so does your engines demand for fuel. An upgraded LPFP can also increase your ability to run a higher mixture of E85. Most N55’s do well running mixes of E20-E40 but higher mixtures require upgraded LPFP’s. Dinan and Fuel-It make excellent options for upgraded LPFP’s. Side note: your EKPS may overheat. We recommend adding some heat sinks to prevent fuel pump malfunction lights and being stranded on the side of the road. FYI, after cool down your baby will restart 🙂
  9. METH – Water/Methanol injection WMI is a common upgrade today in turbocharged and supercharged applications. Water/Meth injection helps lower the Intake Air Temps. This makes for more power. The Burger Tuning Meth kit with FSB controller makes it an easy choice for those who run a JB4.
  10. SPARK PLUGS – If you’ve decided to do most of the above mods we recommend changing your spark plugs to the one step colder NGK 95770’s. You need to manually gap these to a narrow 0.022”. We’ve seen improved power and reduced misfire issues as you start increasing the power in your BMW X1 35i E84 Project Sleeper N55.

Now that you have your BMW X1 35i E84 Project Sleeper making some real power, let’s talk about cosmetic, brake and suspension upgrades. On the track, your car is only as fast as your brakes. Here’s a list of some of our favorite chassis upgrades.

Top 10 E84 X1 35i Chassis and Cosmetic Upgrades:

  1. Stainless Steel Brake Lines – Whether you upgrade your brakes or stick with your factory setup, SS lines will improve pedal feel without costing you an arm and a leg. Your factory brake lines are made up of polymeric inner lining covered in thick rubber. As a result they expand under the extreme pressures found in your hydraulic brake system when under load. SS brake lines have a teflon inner lining covered in braided stainless steel. SS  Lines expand less and maintain a firmer pedal feel under heavy braking. You’ll notice more difference as you start pushing your awesome E84.
  2. Performance Brake Pads and Rotors – Cross-drilled rotors help dissipate the heat during heavy braking and racing conditions. Once again, the great news here is that we have an abundance of options from multiple manufacturers to upgrade our brake pads & rotors. In most cases you can find excellent upgrade options for less than the BMW OEM ones. Stop-Tech makes some really nice pads and rotorsfor our X1 35i’s.
  3. Swaybars – One of the most noticeable upgrades, with regards to improved turn-in that you can make to your cars suspension is a larger or stiffer set of swaybars. Depending on whether or not you have the Sport Package suspension, your E84 suspension may already be in a good place but you can always get improved turn-in with upgraded sway bars.
  4. Lowering Springs – Springs can drop your vehicle along with its center of gravity. A lower center of gravity will improve your cars handling in the turns and make your vehicle  look more aggressive as well. We like the sport springs from H&R and Dinan but Dinan doesn’t list an application for the E84. The key to a good install is a proper alignment after installation.
  5. Sport Shocks & Struts – There’s no doubt that upgraded struts and shocks will improve the handling of your BMW X1 35i E84 Project Sleeper. The biggest decision here is, which ones. You can choose from stock calibration all the way to race coil-overs. If your E84 struts and shocks are original, it’s time to have them checked and most likely upgraded anyway. Your decision here needs to be based on how you use your car and where you drive.
  6. Strut Tower Brace – The chassis on the E84 is already pretty rigid and not known for a lot of chassis flex but a strut tower brace ties the two front strut towers together improving handling. Tons of options on the market for these. Prices range from as low as $150 to over $1,000 for pretty BMW M-Sport carbon fiber strut tower braces. Regardless of what you want to spend they all do the same job.
  7. Rims – Where do we start? With so many manufacturers and styles this one comes down to budget and personal preference. Dinan makes some really beautiful options for your BMW X1 35i e84 project sleeper but we went with a set of F80 M3 19″ rims to really dress up our X1 35i.
  8. Black Kidney Grills – This is a very simple mod but it can make a big statement when you black out your kidney grills. The look is considerably more aggressive and just adds a nice, sporty touch to you Bimmer.
  9. Coilovers – We’ve decided to move over to coilovers from KW. The improved ride quality and height adjustability make coilovers the ultimate choice. We’re going with KW V1’s, check out the KW website for applications here.

These lists are just our opinion. Depending on your driving style, goals etc., we may recommend other upgrades. In some cases we may recommend a different order but overall these are our favorite BMW X1 35i E84 Project Sleeper upgrades.

  1. Hey guys – great project. I have been looking for a stiffer rear swaybar for my 2015 e84 x1 to reduce the understeer. Any suggestions on a good one?

    1. Thanks Alex. We haven’t put our X1 on the track yet but we plan on adding an upgraded sway-bar very soon. We’ll let you know what we find and document the install and results here on our blog. Thanks again

  2. Hey guys, beautiful write-up! I’m in high debate between getting an older X1 35i and adding serious power to it, or see if i can find a used X3 M40i for a decent price. I’m also not to sure between the X1 35i and it’s slightly larger brother the X3 Xdrive 35i. What made you chose the X1 platform?

My question to you guys is, can you list the stock performance vs all the upgrades you list here? I would like to know the gains and drivability changes that they make to the X1 35i. How much torque can the 35i auto transmission hold before it needs upgrading?

    thank you!

    1. Hi q2subzero, thanks for the kind words. We chose the X1 35i for a number of reasons. The E84 is basically a 335Xi and as a result has tons of available mods, it’s lighter than the X3, and the 6-speed trans is very robust. The B58 engine in the X3 M40i is a very capable power-plant and Terry at Burger Tuning has already made some serious power on stock turbo. We’ve built three different X1 35i’s ranging from FBO, FBO+Meth+Pure S1 to FBO, PI, Pure Stage2 running E85. The White M-sport in this blog is very drive-able, plenty fast and very reliable. Our previous build with the Pure Stage 2 turbo and port injection made serious power but reliability definitely suffered. We reached the maximum torque of the transmission in that build. At a 1/2 mile roll race event the car would go into limp-mode repeatedly in 5th gear. The trans would be stuck in 5th gear and after pulling codes it was a torque limit fail-safe. Don’t remember the exact code now, this was a few of years ago and we no longer have that car. At that time that X1 was most likely putting down 550-600 lb./ft of torque. The transmission did not suffer any damage because the DME would pop the code and put the car in limp-mode. At the time we couldn’t find a way to code this out and moved on. Our guess is that BMW feels 550-600 lb./ft is the limit. Stock the X1 35i was reported to go 0-60 in 5.3 seconds and run the 1/4 mile in 14.1. Our first X1 35i that was FBO running a JB4 and E30 ran the 1/4 in 12.7, the Stage 2 beast ran 11.9 with traction problems at the line. The stock tires on the S2 E84 couldn’t hold the power even on a properly prep track. Current build has posted a verified 0-60 of 4.3 with some wheel spin on launch. Haven’t run the dragy for 0-60 since installing the F80 wheels and big tires. Hope this helps. Keep us posted on what you decide to do.

        1. Hi Steven, That’s a great question. With the right tune, supporting mods and octane the stock turbo will peak at around 400whp. The N55 in our X1 35i’s has a pneumatic wastegate and makes a little less power than the electronic wastegate in the later N55’s. The main drawback of the stock turbo is that it’s too small to make any real power up top. The boost curve and resulting power curve drop off dramatically as RPM’s build. Check out the Pure Turbos dyno charts here https://www.pureturbos.com/store/bmw-upgrade-turbos-4/bmw-135i-335i-n55-single-turbo-upgrade.html where they put the stock turbo against their Stage 1 turbo upgrade. The S1 doesn’t make much more power at peak but look at how the stock turbo runs out of steam as RPM’s build and the S1 starts to shine. At 6K RPM’s the difference is 45whp. Bottom line; a properly built stock turbo X1 35i is still a fast sleeper, you just need to shift manually before the trans does to keep it in the sweet spot 🙂

          1. At what HP/TQ point does the X1’s internals come to question? Can the N55 handle 400, 500, 600hp before internal upgrades are needed? forged pistons only? or the full rod/piston upgrade?

  3. I just discovered the e84 35i after this build caught my eye. I’m intrigued. Any thoughts on an exhaust system? My e92 335i has a PE system and many have performed a mod on their existing systems to achieve some “m like” sounds.

  4. Can you please email me, I am doing most of this work to my X1 at this time. Wondering about more info on the turbo install, any hiccups? what about the Fuel it?

      1. Same I have ac schnitzer e46 steel metallic blue shell waiting for a n54 to be dropped in. It’s arguably the best chassis in regards to looks weight and mechanical operability in my opinion. Oh and most came with the Harmon kardon system and that’s always a + 😊

  5. Finally taking the dive into purchasing a used BMW X1 35i. Should I be worried about mileage? Also, 2015 V 2016? I know the model year changed then. Engines the same, or is it the same 35I. Also, Xdrive or Rear?

Apologies on some of the questions. First time in 15 years to ever ask a question on any forum let alone this amazing well thought outlet build form. This build pushed me into making the decision to by the 35i x1

Looking into 50-65k in regards to mileage with the build similar to what you have going.

Build To consist of Ecu, exhaust, inter cooler etc.

Using the car for client concierge here in Boston. So, this must remain esthetically pleasing to the eye.(client facing) Sleeper status!

    1. Hi Caleb,

2015 and 2016 X1’s are completely different cars and the 35i is not available in 2016. The N55 is a very robust engine and a properly maintained X1 35i with 50-65K miles should serve you well. Great choice of vehicle for your use. The X1 35i is aesthetically pleasing (IMO) with tons of available mods to make it a sleeper and xDrive for those Boston winters. Seems like a good choice to me 🙂

      Thanks for visiting our site,
      Mike

      1. Mike,

Thank you so much for the reply.

We signed the paper work today for a 2015 BMW X1 35i XDrive in LeMans blue over tan interior with a black headliner.

This BMW is fully loaded to the gills which includes the Ultimate Package, All M-Sport options inside & out. Panoramic roof.

We’re now deciding to put in Apple car play from Bimmer Tech.

I would like to make the car a sleeper.

Do you have any advice on what to add first? Charge pipe (what brand) air in take (what brand), intercooler (what size) and Ecu.

Should I piggy back the Ecu? Also why brands and what sizes of the above mentioned aftermarket products?

I will definitely use your recommendations for this build. Thank you so much for the reply!

        1. Congrats! Love the color combo and options. The M-Sport is going to come in handy as you start adding power because of the oil cooler.

Find someone locally who can flash your trans with Alpina software. VRSF Chargepipe, JB4 with BT module, BMS Intake for starters. Any aftermarket FMIC will make a huge difference but I like the Active Auto Werks and VRSF 5″.

Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions. Happy to help, Mike

  6. Hey guys,

So I just started adding some modifications to my 2013 BMW X1 E84 N20 sdrive28i and I wanted to know if it’s possible/safe for me to do the transmission tune on my car. I realize our X1’s don;t have the same engines but I feel that my transmission could be faster and has some of the issues that yours did in the past that you mentioned. I also want to add a BOV at some point or another and wanted to know whats’s your guys opinion on that, because I saw you guys added a diverter valve and was curious to know the advantages of your decision over a BOV. You guys have such a cool project here and honestly gives me something to aspire too, I’m so glad you guys are sharing what you’re doing here on a public forum. Any and all help is appreciated, thanks so much.

    Best,
    Kaori

  7. Ive been thinking about tracking mine. I will be upgrading the brakes and looking at springs, possibly coil overs. Definitely doing the alpina tranny flash and looking at burger or mhd tune. I have been tracking my e24 but I want to start putting down some more power.

  8. Hey, I have a 2014 X1 35i M with only 65k on it. Original, in great condition. Perfect. I’m torn between keeping/modding or selling it because it’s too nice and I have another car that could use some mods (i’m more into 4×4 /overlanding now) If I decide to sell my E84, what do you think i should hope for price wise? thx for any advice. Difficult to find what they are actually worth. Thank you

    1. Hi Irvbailey, my apologies for the delay. The fronts are 255/35 ZR19 and the rears are 295/30 ZR19. Need to keep the rolling circumference the same front and back.
